For just the second time in ONE Championship history, a pair of Filipinos will battle for a ONE World Championship, as reigning ONE Strawweight World Champion Joshua “The Passion” Pacio puts his title on the line against multiple-time Wushu gold medalist Rene ‘D’ Challenger’ Catalan in the main event of ONE: Masters of Fate, Friday, November 8th at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Manila, Philippines.

The 23-year old Pacio, a rising star from the famed Team Lakay camp in La Trinidad, Benguet, is a two-time world champion and is looking to get a first successful title defense under his belt. “The Passion” is coming off a scintillating head kick knockout victory over former champion Yosuke Saruta to reclaim the title back in April.

A former Philippine Wushu National Team member, Catalan began his mixed martial arts career late, and suffered back-to-back defeats in his first two outings. The Catalan Fighting System founder has never looked back since then, racking up an impressive six consecutive wins, with his latest conquest being former two-time champion Yoshitaka Naito, being the first man to TKO the Japanese grappler. The 40-year old now looks to capture his first world title in MMA.

Also on the card, a couple of Filipino fan favorites and former world champions make their return to action, as two-time ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang looks to snap a two-match losing skid when he faces Mongolian up-and-comer Amarsanaa “Spear” Tsogookhuu in the lightweight co-main event, and former ONE Flyweight World Champion Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio also looks to bounce back when he meets Finland’s Toni “Dynamite” Tauru in a rematch of their 2016 bout.

Plus, Robin “The Ilonggo” Catalan hopes to set the tone for his older brother Rene, as he meets Cuban wrestler Gustavo “El Gladiador” Balart in the preliminary card, and reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight Muay Thai and Kickboxing World Champion Stamp Fairtex of Thailand continues her journey towards a third world championship as she meets Vietnamese-American striker Bi “Killer Bee” Nguyen in a women’s atomweight MMA bout.
ONE’s strawweight title is on the line in the main event between current champion Joshua Pacio and challenger Rene Catalan. Team Lakay’s Pacio claimed the divisional title in September last year over Yoshitaka Naito in a title fight rematch; their 2016 bout seeing Naito defend his belt by submission. Pacio’s first defense did not go to plan dropping a close decision to Yosuke Saruta in January.

However, a “Knockout of the Year” contender would come in their rematch with Pacio’s knee finishing the title fight in round four. His opponent, Catalan, looks to add a seventh straight victory underneath the ONE banner. Multiple victories over newcomers led to his biggest test in July of 2018 against then-undefeated Stefer Rahardian, taking the unanimous decision. Catalan would back it up in March by taking out the aforementioned Yoshitaka Natio by knockout in the first, propelling him to this title fight with Pacio.ONE: “Masters of Fate” is set for Manila on Friday night. There is also an intriguing atomweight belt between Bi Nguyen and Stamp Fairtex. The former was beaten by a Burmese fighter on her promotional debut while the latter is the reigning kickboxing and Muay Thai champion.Bi Nguyen (5-4) has gone to a split decision in her last two ONE Championship bouts and hasn’t looked too impressive on either occasion. She lost to a boxer from Myanmar after deciding to engage her in a striking battle.

That would surely be a mistake against Muay Thai veteran Stamp Fairtex (2-0) who might have a very limited ground game. If Nguyen can take her down it will be interesting, but if the Vietnamese American decides to make this a standup fight she will be at a considerable disadvantage.
